reminding everyone that the in-universe problem with The Doctor and The Master isn’t “ooo horrible nasty enemies who hate each other and don’t get along and fight all the time but are also in love”
the problem is that they get along. the problem is that they can’t stop themselves from falling naturally into a rhythm of riffing off one another and enjoying the other’s company. THAT is the problem. the problem is that it works and that’s the thing that caused all their issues. they like one another. they just click.
Can get on board with this if we have one addendum: both of their current personae are developed specifically in defense of something earnest and real at their core. The difference is WHY.
The “Doctor” persona is a response to and attempt to improve upon innate character flaws. The Doctor wants to do better than they know they naturally tend to be, to counteract their own insatiable need for stimulation, their caprice and flight, their ability to manipulate. They are trying to use all those traits to help others, now, so that they can live with themself. This attempt to do better via the Doctor persona is ironically is the most earnestly Healer/Helper trait they have.
The “Master” persona is a response to feelings of abandonment, powerlessness, rejection and betrayal. The Master wants to never feel that helpless and expendable again, never wants to be in the position of being discarded, rejected, thought of as lacking or “wrong,” so they embrace their suspicions that they are “monstrous”–they turn that insecurity into awful and violent armor– in order to exact control. They want autonomy and they want to weaponize their persona of invincibility to protect that autonomy, even if it means stepping on every ant, even if it means being the one thing the Doctor can never fix.
That they genuinely click, are compatible to the marrow, is the reason why they keep trying to change each other, while clinging to those personae, and fail. Yes, it’s a vegetarian and a hunter, but WHY they hold fast to those clashing belief systems, and the fact that they don’t HAVE to, is also important.
